Geneviève runs an umbrella business with her mother. She is in love with Guy, a young garage owner who is soon to leave for military service in Algeria. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg won the Golden Palm at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival.
Jacques Demy
Jacques Demy (5 June 1931 – 27 October 1990) was a French director, lyricist, and screenwriter. He appeared in the wake of the French New Wave alongside contemporaries like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut. Demy's films are celebrated for their visual style. He is best known for the two musicals he directed in the mid-1960s: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967). (Wikipedia)

Le réalisateur Jacques Demy et le compositeur Michel Legrand étaient comme deux frères jumeaux; la pensée de l'un épousait celle de l'autre. Ensemble, ils ont inventé le cinéma français chanté avec les films Les parapluies de Cherbourg, Les demoiselles de Rochefort, Peau d'âne... Le duo a même été couronné d'une Palme d'or et d'un Oscar.
