Once a month, the Goethe-Institut collaborates with the Cinémathèque québécoise to present a significant work of contemporary German cinema: fiction films, documentaries, bold and entertaining productions by established and emerging filmmakers.
Elaha is a young Kurdish-German woman on the cusp of becoming a bride. She is torn between unconditional love for her family and her own aspirations in life. As her community buzzes with excitement about the upcoming marriage, Elaha struggles with the hidden knowledge that she is no longer a virgin. Knowing this would cause shame to her family and fiancé, she desperately believes she must "restore" her virginity. Ultimately, she is faced with a decision: to tell the truth or live a life of delusion.
Milena Aboyan
Milena Aboyan is an Armenian screenwriter and filmmaker. She began studying acting in Germany in 2010 and was involved in several theatre productions. After receiving her acting degree, she changed her focus to writing and worked as an assistant dramaturge on an early-evening series on the German ARD TV channel. In 2015, she took up a degree in screenwriting at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Elaha is her debut feature film as a director.
