Chantal Akerman was a Belgian film director, screenwriter, artist, and film professor at the City College of New York. She is best known for her films Je Tu Il Elle (1974), Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), and News from Home (1976). The second of these was ranked the greatest film of all time in Sight & Sound magazine's 2022 "Greatest Films of All Time" critics poll, making her the first woman to top the poll. The other two films also appeared in the same poll. Chantal Akerman is considered one of the leading figures of modern cinema and a pioneer of contemplative cinema.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul is a Thai independent film director, screenwriter, film producer and Professor at Tama Art University in Tokyo. Working outside the strict confines of the Thai film studio system, Apichatpong has directed several features and dozens of short films. His feature films include Cemetery of Splendour (2015), Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010), winner of the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival, Syndromes and a Century (2006), the first Thai film to be entered in competition at the Venice International Film Festiva, and Tropical Malady (2004), winner the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He also received numerous additional accolades. Themes reflected in his films include dreams, nature, sexuality (including his own homosexuality), and Western perceptions of Thailand and Asia. His films also display a preference for unconventional narrative structures and for working with non-actors.

Wang Bing is a Chinese director, often referred to as one of the foremost figures in documentary film-making. Wang is the founder of his own production company, Wang Bing Studios, which produces most of his films. His movie on Chinese labour camps, The Ditch, was included in the 2010 Venice Film Festival as the film sorpresa.
