Chicken with Plums
The author of the Persepolis graphic novel passed away on June 3, 2026. Her masterwork must not overshadow the fact that she directed five other feature-length films, including Chicken with Plums, of which we hold a 35mm print in our collections.
Tehran, 1958. Nasser Ali Khan, the most celebrated violin player, has his beloved instrument broken. Unable to find another to replace it, life without music seems intolerable. He stays in bed and slips further and further into his reveries from his youth to his own children’s futures. Over the course of the week that follows, and as the pieces of this captivating story fall into place, we understand his poignant secret and the profundity of his decision to give up life for music and love.
Marjane Satrapi
Marjane Satrapi is a Franco-Iranian artist best known as a graphic novelist and film director. She rose to fame with Persepolis, a four-volume autobiographical graphic novel in which she recounts her childhood and youth between the Iran of the Islamic Revolution and the Europe of the 1980s and 1990s. The series sold over a million copies in France, was translated into many languages, and won awards around the world. Right after, she published two graphic novels set in Iran, Embroideries and Chicken with Plums. Her first two films, co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, are adaptations of her works: the animated feature Persepolis, which won awards at Cannes in 2007 and the Césars in 2008, and the 2011 film Chicken with Plums. Her film The Voices (2014), not adapted from one of her work, was followed by the Marie Curie biopic Radioactive (2019), and the ensemble film Paradis Paris (2024).
Vincent Paronnaud
Vincent Paronnaud is a French comics artist and filmmaker. He published his first pages in the fanzine Les aventures de Miguel in 1995. He is a collaborator on Ferraille magazine, which he took over with his friend Cizo. In 2007, he and Marjane Satrapi were awarded the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for Persepolis, which went on to win two Césars the following year for Best First Film and Best Adaptation. The film was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2008 Academy Awards. In 2008, he received the Fauve d'or for best comic book at the Angoulême Festival for his Pinocchio. In 2016, he was awarded the Pépite d'or at the Montreuil Children's Book Fair for Dans la forêt sombre et mystérieuse, a children's graphic novel.
