Ferme familiale
The mission of the Centre d'art et essai de la Cinémathèque québécoise (CAECQ) is to primary program Quebec-made documentaries and independent fiction, as well as international documentaries, animated and foreign films, while encouraging opportunities for meetings between the public and the artists. Its programming is presented in conjunction with the Cinémathèque québécoise’s under the label New releases.
With an average age of 53 among Quebec farmers, family farms are under pressure to either sell up or get bigger.
On rang du 5 in St-Louis-de-Gonzague, while their neighbors are giving up dairy farming, two brothers and their three sons, partners in the Montcalm et frères farm, are investing $3 million in a new barn and state-of-the-art robots. This debt will keep them on their toes for the next few years. But they have no choice if they want the next generation to continue the work begun by their elders 100 years ago.
Ferme familiale paints a human portrait of dairy farming, the passing of the family business from one generation to the next, the impact of modern values on rural life, and the uncertain future of this facet of our identity.
