Synopsis

The life of Olfa, a Tunisian woman and mother of four daughters, oscillates between light and shadow. One day, her two eldest daughters disappear. To fill their absence, director Kaouther Ben Hania calls upon professional actors to re-enact the story of Olfa and her daughters.

Kaouther Ben Hania

Kaouther Ben Hania studied film in Tunis and Paris (La Fémis and the Sorbonne). She directed several short films, including Sheikh's Watermelons (2018) and Wooden Hand (2013), which was selected for several international festivals and won numerous awards. The Challat of Tunis, her first feature film, opened the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 and enjoyed international success both at festivals and in theaters, where it was distributed in more than 15 countries. She then directed Zaineb Hates the Snow, a feature-length documentary filmed over six years in Tunisia and Canada, which premiered in the official selection at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival. Her fiction feature Beauty and the Dogs was selected at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Best Sound Creation Award. In 2020, she directed The Man Who Sold His Skin, starring Monica Bellucci, which premiered in the official selection at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2021. With Four Daughters, Kaouther Ben Hania is competing for the first time in the Official Competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The film was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 Academy Award and won the César Award for Best Documentary. It received numerous awards and has been distributed in over 40 countries. The Voice of Hind Rajab is her sixth feature film. Presented in competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, it won the Grand Jury Prize.
