In its latest issue, the film magazine 24 images dedicates a special feature to the theme of our symposium, Film Archives Beget Films, to be held on April 28-29. In conjunction with this editorial coverage, and just ahead of the symposium, we are presenting a program entirely focused on this theme; the re-use of archival film footage in films. While not aiming to be exhaustive, the program highlights the diversity of practices from an aesthetic and historical perspective.

Ron Mann
Ronald Mann is a Canadian documentary filmmaker. He began making films at a young age, creating Super 8 films in the 1970s, and producing short films while in high school. He did not attend film school; instead, he learned filmmaking firsthand, and using his own funds. His notable works include Imagine the Sound (1981), Comic Book Confidential (1988), as well as Grass (1999), and Go Further (2003), both featuring Woody Harrelson. He also directed In the Wake of the Flood (2010), featuring author Margaret Atwood, and Altman (2014), a documentary on the life and career of film director Robert Altman. Mann has served as a mentor to and worked with many filmmakers from the Toronto New Wave of the 1980s, including Atom Egoyan, Bruce McDonald, Jeremy Podeswa, and Peter Mettler.
