Cinema is a screen onto which we can project our fears, torments and the monstrosities of the world. The screen protects us from what we see, but cinema has also permanently anchored our nightmares around a few powerful images (empty houses, hostile attics and basements, demonic masks, bloodcurdling grimaces, disturbing postures). Throughout the summer, the Cinémathèque québécoise will be presenting a series of films encompassing more than one hundred and twenty years of horror, reminding us that what scares us most is to make the deepest of our fears tangible and credible.
Having survived a strange assassination attempt and seeing her savings disappear, 25-year-old Maya returns to her isolated hometown in the hope that the family villa will pay off. Her best friend, Dini, accompanies her. The two women find themselves confronted with an empty villa and rather unapproachable villagers, whose leader is a mysterious wayang puppet master. As soon as the villagers discover who Maya is, their aloof attitude turns into a desire to kill: in their minds, she is responsible for the curse that hangs over the village. Can she stay away from their sharp knives long enough to prove that the curse is not her fault?
