Japanese Avant-Garde Pioneers
The mission of the Centre d'art et essai de la Cinémathèque québécoise (CAECQ) is to primary program Quebec-made documentaries and independent fiction, as well as international documentaries, animated and foreign films, while encouraging opportunities for meetings between the public and the artists. Its programming is presented in conjunction with the Cinémathèque québécoise’s under the label New releases.
Amidst the profound social change and political turmoil of 1960s post-war Japan, a bold generation of avant-garde artists emerged, redefining the boundaries of art through underground theatre, experimental photography, surreal illustrations, and the radical dance of Butoh. Their groundbreaking creations not only captured the spirit of their time but also transformed the global art landscape forever.

Amélie Ravalec
Amélie Ravalec is a London-based Parisian film director, producer, photographer and publisher. She directed documentaries on avant-garde, underground and experimental art and music, focusing on Japanese avant-garde art and photography (Japanese Avant-Garde Pioneers and Japan Visions, 2025), the history of art and madness (Art & Mind, 2019), industrial music (Industrial Soundtrack For The Urban Decay, 2015) and underground techno music (Paris/Berlin: 20 Years Of Underground Techno, 2012).
