La bonne année
Filmmaker Claude Lelouch left its mark on several generations of spectators in Quebec. It has been a few years since we screened films by this filmmaker in Montreal and today we remember him by screening two of his most emblematic titles: Un homme et une femme and La bonne année. Two proposals of a famous alloy between lively and sensitive actors (often experienced in improvisation) and a proven sense of rhythm and movement.
Released from prison on New Year's Eve, Simon is looking for the beautiful antique dealer he fell in love with while planning the heist after which he was arrested. Lelouch has turned a detective story into a sentimental comedy.
Claude Lelouch
Claude Lelouch is a French film director, screenwriter, and producer. He started his career at the beginning of the French New Wave, but is rarely associated with it, even though he adopted some of its principles. He gained success in 1965 with Une fille et des fusils, followed the next year by Un homme et une femme, which brought him recognition both in France and internationally. In the 1980s and 1990s, he produced and directed grand romantic epics and emotional journeys, with broad, open and choral forms, like Les uns et les autres (1981), Partir, revenir (1985), and Les misérables (1995). He alternated these with resolutely optimistic, lighthearted comedies, lighter in form and substance, like Tout ça… pour ça ! (1993), Le courage d'aimer (2005), and Un plus une (2015). His filmmaking career has continued into the 2020s. He won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Palme d’or at the Cannes Film Festival for Un homme et une femme, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Grand prix du cinéma français for Vivre pour vivre, and was nominated twice for the César awards: once in 1982 for Best Film for Les uns et les autres, and a second time in 2002 for Best Film from the European Union for 11'09"01 - September 11.
