A father and son travel by train to the Balmoral Institute, where the father will ask for work as a teacher. When they arrive, the father petitions the director of the institute to also accept his son, an aspiring composer, as a resident there. But the son is repulsed by the institute. He flees, embarking on a long voyage. The father remains at the institute and discovers he has a rival for the permanent position. The two men carry out a set of trials, hoping to be retained.
