Phoenixes
We have the opportunity to showcase a few films that have shine in the past few months in Quebec. While we await the winner of the Prix collégial du cinéma québécois, let's discover - or rediscover the nominated films of Jean-François Leblanc, Anne Émond, Steve Patry, Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr and Matthew Rankin. A program of short films will also offer a glimpse at the best offerings of the year.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with actor Maxime Genois

In the mid-2000s, Joël Girard, a charismatic and endearing soldier, is about to be deployed to Afghanistan. His wife and son, Michelle and Jacob, must learn to live with this new reality: this new mission comes with real risk. In an effort to get closer to Jacob, Joël starts coaching his soccer team, the Phoenixes. Despite his efforts, a rift will grow between him and his son.
Phoenixes is an autobiographical work that plunges us headfirst into the reality of military families. Through an intimate and luminous drama, the director invites us to revisit a troubled period of Canadian history.
Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr
Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr grew up on Quebec City’s military base. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University. A producer, a screenwriter and a director, his films have won several awards and nominations. His latest film, Phoenixes (2024), tells the story of his experience as the son of a Canadian soldier.
