Since Méliès, filmmakers have embraced the fanstastic potential of cinema, creating infinite phantasmagorias and extraordinary spectacles where the unreal becomes real. After finding an old treasure map in an attic, four kids decide to set out in search of a pirate's loot, which leads them to the hideout of a family of counterfeiters. A powerful critique of unbridled capitalism and real estate vultures, The Goonies is also a remarkably effective pirate movie.
