Synopsis

Mathieu is a brilliant neurosurgeon whose perfect life is falling apart. Impending divorce, job loss, substance abuse, and a mid-life crisis are all factors that can cause him to go off the rails. In addition, the sudden death of his father forces him to return home to Anishinaabe territory, a place he has tried to avoid since his youth. Nevertheless, Mathieu agrees to go and deposit his father's ashes in the heart of their ancestral territory and wishes to find himself at the same time. The break away from the city promises to be a nice getaway until Mathieu realizes that he is now the prey of an evil creature known as the Wendigo.

Jason Brennan

Jason Brennan is an Anishnabe producer, screenwriter, and filmmaker from Kitigan Zibi in the Outaouais region. He studied fine arts, television, and cinema at the Algonquin College in Ottawa. He is the founder of Nish Média, the only Indigenous owned production company in the Outaouais. Through his company, Brennan aims to create works that move beyond the usual clichés associated with Indigenous peoples, while fostering the development of Indigenous talent in television and film production. In 2020, he directed L’inhumain, his first feature as a screenwriter and filmmaker, inspired by the legend of the Wendigo. The psychological thriller, which also takes from horror cinema, was the first French-language Indigenous genre film. L’inhumain premiered at the Abitibi-Témiscamingue International Film Festival in the fall of 2021, and stars singer and actor Samian. Brennan also produced Pour toi Flora (2022), the first Indigenous series from Radio-Canada, which deals with the painful legacy of residential schools in Quebec. The series won several international awards and was sold to TV5 Monde, fulfilling Brennan's goal of promoting Indigenous culture around the world.
