James Gray

Of Ukrainian descent, James Gray was born in New York in 1969. Initially aspiring to be a painter, he fell in love with cinema as a teenager after discovering the films of Francis Ford Coppola. During his time at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, he directed Cowboys and Angels (1991), a student film that enabled him to finance his first feature film, Little Odessa (1994), which he directed at the age of 25. This debut earned him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival. Gray’s subsequent films, The Yards (2000), We Own the Night (2007), Two Lovers (2008), The Immigrant (2013), The Lost City of Z (2016) and Ad Astra (2019), feature star-studded casts and were selected for international film festivals. In 2022, he directed Armageddon Time, a deeply personal autobiographical film recalling his youth in Queens.
