Manon Barbeau

Manon Barbeau worked for over thirty years as a screenwriter and director for several organizations, including Télé-Québec and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). She wrote over a hundred screenplays and directed a dozen award-winning documentaries. In 2003, she founded Vidéo Paradiso and the Wapikoni mobile, in collaboration with the Atikamekw Nation, the First Nations Youth Council of Quebec and Labrador and the NFB. Thanks to the ambulatory video and music creation studios for First Nations youth, the Wapikoni mobile has since produce over 1200 films and 820 original music. In 2006, she founded Musique nomade, which offers creative workshops and a showcase for Indigenous musicians and diversity. Manon Barbeau has received many national and international honours, including Ashoka Fellow (2009), Officer of the Ordre national du Québec, and the Prix Albert-Tessier (2014), the highest recognition for a filmmaker in Québec. In 2017, she devient was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada for her "her cinematographic achievements and dedication to First Nations youth". She was named Chevalière de l'Ordre de Montréal for her cinematographic career and social involvement, Chevalière des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française, and in 2018, she received the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Unesco / Madanjeet Singh Prize for the promotion of Tolerance and Non-violence. She has been the president of the Cinémathèque québécoise’s board of directors from 2021 to 2025.
