Synopsis

Donghwa, a poet in his thirties, accompanies his girlfriend Junhee to her parents' home for the first time. Struck by the size and beauty of the property, he accepts an invitation to spend the day with her family. Over the course of a single day filled with home-cooked meals, temple visits, and flowing conversation, the family subtly assesses whether this bohemian poet is worthy of their daughter. As the makgeolli loosens inhibitions at dinner, polite introductions give way to uncomfortable truths about class, ambition, and artistic authenticity.

What Does that Nature Say to You

Hong Sang-soo

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Hong Sang-soo is widely regarded as one of the most original and influential voices in contemporary world cinema. After studying film at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, the California College of the Arts, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he made his feature debut with The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well (1996), which immediately established his minimalist and incisive approach to storytelling. Over the following three decades, Hong has written and directed more than thirty films, many of which have premiered in major international festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and New York. Known for his gentle humor, intricate repetitions, and deceptively simple structure, his work explores human relationships, artistic identity, and the interplay between chance and memory. Among his acclaimed titles are Right Now, Wrong Then (2015, Golden Leopard at Locarno), On the Beach at Night Alone (2017, Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlinale), The Woman Who Ran (2020, Best Director at the Berlinale), The Novelist's Film (2022, Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale), and In Our Day (2023). His 33rd feature, What Does That Nature Say to You (2025), premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, marking Hong's sixth consecutive Berlinale selection.
