Demons and Wonders

Giants, fairies, magicians, ghosts, dragons, and monsters of all kinds… Here’s what your Cinémathèque has in store this summer! Since Méliès, filmmakers have embraced the fanstastic potential of cinema, creating infinite phantasmagorias and extraordinary spectacles where the unreal becomes real. Step into a world of fantasy and boundless imagination: whatever your generation, the monsters and wonders that once filled your childhood dreams are back this summer 2025!

Fairy tales in Fantasy Cinema

Cinema has often drawn on the rich imagination of fairy tales, drawing on certain symbolic motifs and narrative patterns. From the white rabbit in The Matrix (the Wachowskis, 1999) - virtual reality being a transposition of Alice's dream - to the story of Pinocchio in A.I. (Steven Spielberg, 2001), to Peter Pan's Tinker Bell guiding the heroine in Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro, 2004). This entertaining lecture will take you on a journey through different representations of fairy tales in cinema, to better understand how they enhance the themes and approach of the films using them.

Sophie Grech earned her stripes working at genre festivals (including Fantasia) and with major American film studios. A press officer since 2015, she is also the founder of the Diffuse agency. Thanks to this varied background, she has developed a passion for both independent cinema and studio productions, which she shares on podcasts such as Pardon le cinéma and Réalisé sans trucage.

Victor Norek created the YouTube channel Le CinématoGrapheur to analyze and dissect blockbusters, with the aim of restoring popcorn cinema to its former glory. He is the author of the book Steven Spielberg: L'art du blockbuster and writes for Rockyrama magazine in France. He has been based in Montreal since 2021.

This discussion will take place in French.
