In Conversation with Joxean Fernández, Director of the Euskadiko Filmategia
We are pleased to welcome the director of a major European film archive, the Basque Film Archive, based in San Sebastián. Joxean Fernández has put together a program of films recently restored by the archive that highlight the uniqueness of Basque cinema within the global film landscape. For this truly exceptional event, we will also welcome the esteemed filmmaker Montxo Armendáriz, a multiple Goya Award winner and Academy Award nominee. He will engage with the audience, particularly during the screening of his film Tasio, whose newly restored version is making its Canadian premiere following a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.
Joxean Fernández is the director of the Basque Film Archive, which will host the 2028 congress of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), just as the Cinémathèque québécoise did in 2025. This conversation, hosted by the programming director of the Cinémathèque québécoise, will provide an opportunity to explore both the institution's history and Basque cinema, while also addressing the challenges of preserving heritage films. The strategic partnership between the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the Archive will also be discussed. This conversation will also serve to highlight the valuable dialogue and exchanges established over the past several years between our two institutions.
Please note that the conversation will be conducted in French.
Duration: 40 min.
A must-see screening!
Montxo Armendáriz's film Obaba will be screened after the conversation at 6 p.m., in the presence of the filmmaker.
