Jamais seul
Jamais seul (Never Alone) is an experience of freedom and escape. It follows the deep desire to lose oneself someplace else, inviting spectators to journey to a place that transports them, in three stages, to a sort of “beyond” that is both distant and intimately familiar.
Actor, writer, and stage director Stéphane Crête presents his first video installation, created in collaboration with cinematographer, producer and editor Philémon Crête, the artist's son.
The installation commands a relationship to the body similar to the one created at the theatre between actor and spectator — a fusion of intimacy, proximity and raw energy typical of certain experimental approaches and numerous performances. The monumental projection at the center of the piece highlights and isolates the actor’s body — in this case, Stéphane Crête’s — amidst stark and breathtaking landscapes. No trick or device lets us turn our eyes away from this at-times-nude, at-times-clothed body, filmed from the feet up.

Transdisciplinary artist, author, stage director, teacher, ritualist and performer, Stéphane Crête navigates with ease in mainstream productions (Dans une galaxie près de chez vous,* Rue King*, Jeune Juliette) as much as in experimental theater creations (Numain, Esteban, Mauvais goût, les Laboratoires Crête). Over the past 30 years, by creating objects that constantly question the limits of representation and that want to be freed from conventional labels, Stéphane Crête has offered a corpus that is often judged to be unclassifiable. Jamais seul is his first installation.
