In collaboration with the Filmoteca Vasca (Basque Film Archive) and the Basque Cultural Institute, as part of the saison Québec-Pays basque, we are presenting a program of films bearing witness to a troubled period in the last half of the twentieth century in Spain, when a far-left, anti-Franco autonomist movement was developing.

Synopsis

Asier and I grew up in the Basque Country. One day he disappeared and I found out he had joined ETA. How could I explain the reasons that led Asier to make a decision, which even I had trouble grasping?

Aitor Merino

Aitor Merino Unzueta (San Sebastian, December 17, 1972) is a Spanish actor and director who was raised in Pamplona. In 2007 , he directed the short film El pan Nuestro, nominated for the Goya Awards that year. In 2013 he became director again, this time with his sister, Amaia Merino. Both directed the documentary Asier y yo, a feature film that deals with the Basque political conflict alongside the friendship between Aitor Merino, himself, and a childhood friend. The documentary was presented to the public at the 2013 San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it won the Irizar Award.

Amaia Merino Unzueta (San Sebastian, December 6, 1970) is an Ecuadorian Spanish actress, screenwriter, editor and director, specializing in documentary editing.
