Carte blanche to Hors champ
"Filming, performing", it is under this simple formulation that we are presenting our third edition of the symposium dedicated to experimental cinema. This form is indeed very regularly linked to performance, even if it is produced before the screening of the films. We propose live performances in which the film medium is reworked, triturated, and returned to its lively expressiveness. Some more general interventions (experimental cinema in Quebec, video experimentation in the feminine, panorama of the current Canadian experimental cinema) complete the program.
Hors champ proposes, in collaboration with the Groupe intervention vidéo, this program of experimental films chosen by Anne Golden, independent curator.
"Collage" of advertising images of the "feminine". The sequence of images deconstructs the unreal model of the woman that advertising conveys in "women's" magazines and in television ads. This fresco of the ideal feminine model reveals the manipulative purpose of advertising and attempts to bring out its ultimate goal: consumerism.

Susto is a cultural disease of chronic fear. This film addresses the disease through the voice of a woman, and her personal account of being stalked by a monster. The film explores various environments where this entity has haunted her, through day, night, seasons, and years. Time is not linear in this film, but shifts through past, memory, and present simultaneously. They say the only way to cure susto is to face the origin of your fears. But what if the truth is far more horrifying than the story?
There was a first image, the girl who plays the violin. Then the monkeys, people climb trees monkeys running. Much fire. Objects that catch fire, a female figure falls and people dance around. Joy or tragedy. A pig in the city, an airplane taking off. Then movements, routes, a train, an underground trip. Still miniatures: The tone sounds like nightmare. Inspired by early video art, The Moon is a poetic exploration of the limits of digital technology through the manipulation and transformation of images.
Cahier 1-4 is a video in chapters: Isabelle Come Back, Jane Fonda, Getting Marnie Out of the House. The title of the project references the film journal Cahiers du Cinema. Working with diverse cultural forms - cinema, the home movie, the music video - Cahier 1-4 draws us into parallel narratives. Here the narratives that are woven into our everyday environment are pulled and stretched to reveal and repeat themselves in the hope that though this we can become actors in our own life.
Untitled (Bernard de Miami) is a short experimental video where objects are animated in successive movements. Sound and image overlap and repeat, illustrating the nostalgic, sentimental and affectionate journeys of various trinkets acquired and accumulated over time.
In the time of COVID19, Coral Short & Winnie Ho (performers) invited artists to do 1-minute performances on Zoom. It was a gesture to connect with and offer self-care to artists around the world. My contribution was to document my performance. After applying white moisturizing cream, I placed a 22 cm Vietnamese rice paper sheet (previously soaked in water) on my face. This was done to hide my Asian face. I also added a medical mask until the end. The soundtrack is an edited voice off of a documentary made by INA (France) title ‘Are the French Racist?’ (1961).
Sign Off reinvents the late-night closing credits from the days when television was not a 24-hour phenomenon. Sign Off takes place in a fictional world inhabited only by identical girls and parodies the patriotic themes inherent in this now-historic genre.
