Cartouche
An icon of Italian cinema, Claudia Cardinale was not strictly Italian, having grown up in Tunis in a family that spoke French and Sicilian. This composite identity undoubtedly allowed her to navigate effortlessly from one cinematography to another. This program attests to this, bringing together some of her most memorable roles in Italy, forays into popular French cinema, and a memorable appearance in a Herzog film. These examples highlight her radiant screen presence and her wide acting range, from whimsical to serious roles.

In the 18th century, a simple thief, courageous and charming, gradually becomes a respected gang leader known as Cartouche. He attacks the great lords and also defends a young gypsy girl, Venus, with whom he falls in love.
Philippe de Broca
Philippe de Broca was a French film director. He directed aroud 30 feature films, including the highly successful That Man from Rio (1964), The Man from Acapulco (1973) and On Guard (1997). His works include historical, romantic epics such as King of Hearts (1966), and Chouans! (1988), as well as comedies with a charismatic, breezy hero ready to embark upon any adventure which comes his way, so long as it means escaping everyday modern life like The Devil by the Tail (1969), Practice Makes Perfect (1979), and The African (1983). He had links with the actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, with whom he made six films, as well as with Jean-Pierre Cassel, Philippe Noiret and Jean Rochefort.
