These works, which have shaped the festival’s history over the years, reflect the variety of its programming – from cult classics to hidden gems, from masters of genre cinema to the audacious fringes of arthouse film, charting a fantastic journey across eras, styles, and cultures.

Johnnie To is a Hong Kong director and producer. A cult figure and highly prolific filmmaker, he is best known in the West for his action films and crime thrillers, which are often critically acclaimed. His biggest international hits, such as Breaking News (2004), Election (2005) and its sequel (2006), Exiled (2006), Mad Detective (2007), and Drug War (2012), have been screened at numerous film festivals around the world. His films, often made in collaboration with the same group of actors, screenwriters, and cinematographers, tend to explore the themes of friendship, fate, and the changing face of Hong Kong society. Sometimes described as a chameleon-like filmmaker for his ability to shift tones from one work to the next, To nevertheless maintains a consistent style, blending restrained realism and social observation with highly stylized visual elements and action scenes.
