Full Moon in Paris

Éric Rohmer

Born in France in 1920 under the name Maurice Schérer, Éric Rohmer developed a passion for literature at a very young age. After studying classics, obtaining a teaching diploma and aspiring to become a writer, he began hosting the Ciné-Club du Quartier Latin in Paris, where he met Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette. He wrote for the Revue du Cinéma before founding the Gazette du Cinéma, and then joining the young Cahiers du Cinéma with the nascent New Wave. He became editor-in-chief from 1957 to 1963. In the early 1950s, he wanted to move into directing and made several short films before signing his first feature, Le signe de lion, in 1959. But it was not until ten years later, as he expanded his series of Moral Tales, that he met with success. In 1962, he also co-founded Les Films du Losange with Barbet Schroeder and Pierre Cottrell. From the 1960s to 2000, Rohmer created an extraordinary body of work, animated by a spirit of independence, which sets him apart from the New Wave, of which he was a leading figure.
