Hochelaga, Land of Souls
In collaboration with Terres en vues, this program serves as a reminder that cinema can be a vessel for peace and make it the subject of its narratives. At the same time, it commemorates the Great Peace of Montreal, signed by the French and 39 First Nations in Montreal in 1701.

François Girard
François Girard is a Québécois filmmaker, screenwriter, and stage director. In 1990, he directed his first feature film, Cargo, followed three years later by Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993), winner of four Genie Awards. He then filmed Peter Gabriel’s concert film, Secret World Live, for which he won the Grammy for Best Music Film in 1996. He directed various television projects before releasing his globally acclaimed 1998 film The Red Violin, which won nine Jutra Awards and eight Genie Awards. Named Best Canadian Film, it received around twenty awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Score. An accomplished artist, his work knows no boundaries as he easily moves between opera, visual art, theater, and cinema. In 2017, he directed Hochelaga, Land of Souls, starring Samian, Sébastien Ricard, and over 300 Indigenous extras. He also directed Tim Roth and Clive Owens in The Song of Names en 2019.
