Homeward
In collaboration with Ukrainian-Canadian programmers Alina Senchenko and Iryna Borzilova, we are presenting a comprehensive overview of Ukrainian film history, spanning nearly a century, from the Soviet era to the present day. A portion of the proceeds from this series will be donated to victims of the war in Ukraine through the Maple Hope Foundation.

The first feature of director Nariman Aliev, Homeward is a road film that also serves as an exploration of grief. After his eldest son is killed in the Russo-Ukrainian War, Mustafa, with his only other son Alim, embarks on a journey to recover the body. Mustafa’s family, like director Aliev, is Crimean Tatar, the Indigenous people of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. Alluding to the historic deportation of Crimean Tatars in 1944, the film becomes a memento of the trek their ancestors made. Aliev’s considered portrayal of the family’s mourning rituals and traditions adds a poignant layer to the story.
Nariman Aliev
Nariman Aliev is an Ukrainian director and screenwriter of Crimean Tatar origin. His short film Without You (2016) was nominated for the Crystal Bear of the Berlin International Film Festival. His debut feature film Homeward (2019) was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. He won the National Film Critics Award "Kinokolo" for Best Director and Best Film.
