To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Fantasia Festival, we present a film series in the image of this now-unmissable event: eclectic and exhilarating. These works, which have shaped the festival’s history over the years, reflect the variety of its programming – from cult classics to hidden gems, from masters of genre cinema to the audacious fringes of arthouse film, charting a fantastic journey across eras, styles, and cultures.

In the futuristic city of Metropolis, humans and robots live side by side. While investigating a human organ trafficking ring, Detective Shunsaku Ban meets Dr. Laughton, a rather unusual scientist who has developed Tima, a new kind of android.
Rintarō
Rintarō is a Japanese anime director. He began working in the animation industry at age 17 as an in-between animator on the 1958 film Hakujaden, which he worked on while working at Toei Animation. His first directing job was the fourth episode of the 1963 series Astro Boy. He became a freelancer in 1971, and worked on many TV series and films, establishing himself as one of the most respected and well-known anime directors in Japan. Rintarō is a fan of science fiction, and has been influenced by American westerns, gangster films, film noir, and French films, as well as the work of Osamu Tezuka. His 2001 film, Metropolis, was based on Tezuka's manga of the same name.
