Synopsis

At the end of 1999, a strange plague devastated Taiwan, killing almost the entire population. Spared from the disease, a man and a woman live in a crumbling building, communicating through a hole accidentally drilled between their two apartments by a plumber.

Tsai Ming-liang

Tsai Ming-liang is a Malaysian filmmaker based in Taiwan. He has written and directed 11 feature films, many short films, and television films. He is one of the most celebrated "Second New Wave" film directors of Taiwanese cinema. His films have been acclaimed worldwide and have won numerous awards at festivals. In 1994, Tsai won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for the film Vive L'amour. He also notably won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize for The River at the 1997 Berlin International Film Festival, the FIPRESCI Prize for The Hole at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, and the Silver Bear - Grand Jury Prize for Stray Dogs in 2013.
