The mission of the Centre d'art et essai de la Cinémathèque québécoise (CAECQ) is to primary program Quebec-made documentaries and independent fiction, as well as international documentaries, animated and foreign films, while encouraging opportunities for meetings between the public and the artists. Its programming is presented in conjunction with the Cinémathèque québécoise’s under the label New releases.

Synopsis

After a violent argument with her mother, Margaret, 35 years old and with a long history of inflicting and suffering from violence, is subject to a strict restraining order before her trial: she’s no longer allowed to make contact with her mother or approach within 100 metres of the family home for three months. But this separation only exacerbates her desire to be closer to her family and so she returns every day to this invisible and impassable frontier.

Ursula Meier

Swiss-French filmmaker Ursula Meier studied cinema in Belgium before gaining recognition for her diverse body of work, which includes both fiction and documentary films. Her short films garnered acclaim, paving the way for her involvement in the ARTE television film collection on the theme "Masculin Féminin". Her feature film debut, Home, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week in 2008, receiving widespread acclaim and earning multiple award nominations, including three for the prestigious César Awards. In 2012, her film Sister received a Special Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, with actor Kacey Mottet Klein earning a nomination for Best Newcomer at the César Awards. Like Home, the film won three Swiss Film Awards including Best Film and once again represented Switzerland in the Academy Awards race for Best International Feature Film. In 2014, Ursula Meier contributed to the collective film Bridges of Sarajevo. She also ventured into English-language filmmaking in 2018, receiving the Suissimage Award for her project Quiet Land. Recently, her film The Line was selected for competition at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival.
