The Sandbox
The mission of the Centre d'art et essai de la Cinémathèque québécoise (CAECQ) is to primary program Quebec-made documentaries and independent fiction, as well as international documentaries, animated and foreign films, while encouraging opportunities for meetings between the public and the artists. Its programming is presented in conjunction with the Cinémathèque québécoise’s under the label New releases.

Through meditative, cinematic landscapes, The Sandbox explores global borders where surveillance and AI decide who lives and who dies. From the Arizona desert to the Mediterranean sea, suffering is clinically managed while control is packaged as security. But if there is no opting out, who is The Sandbox really protecting?
Kenya-Jade Pinto
Kenya-Jade Pinto is an Indo-Kenyan-Canadian documentary photographer, filmmaker, and lawyer. Her hyphenated worldview informs her work where she focuses on non-fiction and narrative projects that navigate themes of displacement, belonging, and access to justice. She blends her creative eye with thoughtful precision. Her training as a human rights lawyer has deepened her practice as a documentarian on projects like The Sandbox (2025). She has participated in DOC Institute’s Breakthrough Program as well as HotDocs’ Emerging Filmmaker Program. She’s the filmmaker-in-residence at York University’s Refugee Law Lab, and in 2021, she was named a National Geographic Explorer. Kenya-Jade is also a member of Women Photograph and Diversify Photo, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations as well as a Juris Doctor (cum laude) with a specialization in International law. She is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.
