Shot in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire, Transformations is an ethereal fiction about a coven of witches. As they collect firewood and supplies for a white-magic ritual, cinematographer Beth Dingman lenses their tasks in gorgeously textured 16 mm, like a lost found-footage film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer.
By revisiting the persecution by the Church and the State of women accused of hereticism and witchcraft in Europe from the 15th to the 17th century, this film pays tribute to witches, past and present, between history and spirituality.
