Logically, we will conclude the summer season with a program devoted to Quentin Tarantino. A true cinephile and the foremost virtuoso of the video store era, he stormed onto the global stage of action and auteur cinema and has never left it. Watching his films back-to-back reveals a body of work built at a blistering pace, with a confidence that might sometimes make one forget the extreme attention to detail in the writing—from the narrative structure down to the smallest lines of dialogue.
A newly formed couple inadvertently finds themselves in possession of a large quantity of cocaine. They try to sell it while the drug’s rightful owners attempt to recover it. The screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino, who tried for several years to get the film produced, but without success. After selling it to French producer Samuel Hadida, Tarantino had Tony Scott read it; Scott loved it so much that he insisted to Hadida that he should direct it.
Tony Scott
Anthony Scott, known as Tony Scott, was a British director, screenwriter, and producer. He was the brother of Ridley Scott, with whom he co-founded the production company Scott Free Productions in 1995. He directed 16 action and thriller feature films, gaining worldwide recognition in 1986 with the blockbuster Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise. He subsequently directed films such as Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), and True Romance (1993), written by Quentin Tarantino. In the early 2000s, he made two successful spy films in Hollywood: Enemy of the State (1998) and Spy Game (2001). He also directed actor Denzel Washington in five films, including his last three, Déjà Vu (2006), The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009), and Unstoppable (2010).
