The Sommets du cinéma d'animation presents

We know the event, the festival organized by the Cinémathèque québécoise presenting the best of animation film. But the Sommets also host a series of animated events held at the Cinémathèque or elsewhere, and which showcase new releases as well as memorable films from the past, short and feature films, screenings at the indoors and outdoors, film lessons and other events.

To be kept up to date with its annual programming, visit the Sommets website.

The Sommets du cinéma d’animation, in partnership with NFB, is pleased to invite you to an Artist’s Talk with Ehsan Gharib

Iranian-born Ehsan Gharib integrates photography, animation and design into his cinema. He created the animation for the award-winning NFB production Oscar (2016), Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre’s portrait of Oscar Peterson, and was part of the animation teams for the feature Jasmine Road (2020) and Disney-produced Disenchanted (2022). His directorial debut, the experimental short Deyzangeroo (2017), won a Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig.

During this Talk, the filmmaker will discuss the creative process behind his latest animated short Samaa (2024); where he continues to experiment with the interplay between music and animation. Ehsan invites us into imagined captivity using striking, hand-painted animation and visceral drumming. The bird’s dramatic plight begs the question: Is freedom a state of being, or is it a state of mind?

Samaa won Best National Short (Les nouveaux alchimistes Competition) at the 2024 FNC.

FREE ADMISSION but RSVP required.
