Cycle

December 2nd - 16th, 2021

Presented in the form of a slideshow, the photographs gathered here highlight the intimate relationship that Hervé Guibert's visual work has with cinema, underlining the framing and movement of images.

The shift in framing, both structural and conceptual, of these photographs offer an outsider perspective on a normative reality. They give us to see marginalized bodies or experiences traditionally placed outside the frame such as homosexuality, disease, childhood and aging, in an approach which, to use the title of the film produced by the artist at the end of his life, singularly combines modesty and shamelessness [La pudeur ou l'impudeur]. It is the economy of this desiring gaze, between restraint and indecency, that is illuminated by the technical, formal, semantic and narrative operations of this selection of photographs also reproduced in the dossier *Hervé Guibert, Le plus que vif *of the Spirale magazine (Spring 2021).

The selection of images was curated by Katrie Chagnon, in collaboration with Daoud Najm and Marie Tourigny, with courtesy of Christine Guibert and the Galerie Les Douches, Paris.
