The Cinémathèque hosts the FIAF 2025 Congress from April 27 to May 2
The Cinémathèque québécoise will host the annual congress of the Fédération internationale des archives du film (FIAF) ** from April 27 to May 2**. The event will include a symposium on the theme “Film Archives Beget Films”, featuring two days of conferences with some thirty speakers from here and abroad. The Cinémathèque's regular programming will also take on the colors of the congress, with screenings showcasing the highlights of its collections and mandate: animated film gems, world premiere commissions, newly restored dramas, documentaries devoted to heritage issues and the reuse of archives. The general public will be able to enjoy this special program, which also includes four new exhibitions.
Since 1938, FIAF has brought together the world's leading institutions dedicated to film heritage. Its annual congress is a key event for those involved in film conservation and archives, who share experiences and collaborate on various projects. The Cinémathèque québécoise is expecting a delegation of over 200 professionals from all over the world.
The program will include several must-see restorations, such as 3 episodes of Michel Brault's series Le son des Français d'Amérique, André Gladu, a heritage gem restored jointly by the Cinémathèque québécoise, Éléphant : mémoire du cinéma québécois and the National Film Board of Canada; 5 films by Joyce Wieland, a legend of Canadian experimental cinema; and 3 episodes of Pierre Dinel and Pierre Hivon's recently restored six saisons attikameks. In keeping with the symposium's theme, a number of re-used films will be shown, including 6 commissioned shorts drawn from a donation by Soviet film collector François Lemai. The public will be able to discover the world premiere of singular works by artists Charles-André Coderre, Ralitsa Doncheva, Michaela Grill, Theodore Ushev, Erin Weisgerber and Steven Woloshen.
Also not to be missed, free screenings of such classics as Luc Bourdon's La mémoire des anges and Donald McWilliams' A Return to Memory. Also on the menu are a number of must-see Quebec and Canadian films, all shot in the metropolis. These include David Cronenberg's Scanners and Léa Pool's À corps perdu.
These are not-to-be-missed events, starting April 28!
