Richard Linklater
Richard Linklater is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer. He is known for making films that deal thematically with suburban culture and the passage of time. After directing two cult comedies of the 90s, Slacker (1990) and Dazed and Confused (1993), he gained recognition with the Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight), which follows the characters played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy with films released between 1995 and 2013. He was later acclaimed for his coming-of-age drama Boyhood (2014), filmed over a period of twelve years. For this film, he received the Silver Bear, the BAFTA, and the Golden Globe for Best Director. He also earned a nomination for the César Award for Best Foreign Film and two other Oscar nominations. He is currently working on an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy Merrily We Roll Along, scheduled for release in 2040. Linklater belongs to a new generation of American independent filmmakers, capable of alternating between experimental cinema and more mainstream productions, similar to Steven Soderbergh, a leader of the movement. He also alternates between productions filmed over many years and more modest films. He is one of the few filmmakers known for their almost annual regularity.
