Cycle
David Lynch: roads to the abyss

From the Kafkaesque journey of Henry Spencer in Eraserhead to the nightmarish drift of the protagonist of Inland Empire, David Lynch has never ceased to take us off the beaten track and over the edge of unsuspected cliffs. The winding roads of the human psyche and discomfort are answered by the intricacies of narrative breakdown and the mise en abyme. The filmmaker opens the doors to parallel worlds reflecting our distorted expectations and challenging our passivity as spectators. There's never a bad excuse to revisit this prolific body of work and experience its vertiginous nature.

Synopsis

In the charming North Carolina town of Lumberton, Mr. Beaumont suffers a heart attack while watering his garden. After visiting his ailing father, his son Jeffrey discovers a decomposing, insect-infested human ear in a field. Jeffrey immediately hands over his find to Inspector Williams, who introduces him to his daughter, Sandy.

Driven by curiosity and an interest in mysteries, Jeffrey decides to investigate with Sandy to determine the identity of the ear's owner and unravel the dark secrets hidden behind Lumberton's innocent exterior. Their investigation leads them into a strange and macabre environment, where they come across Dorothy Vallens, a psychologically fragile cabaret singer, and Frank Booth, a dangerous and perverse psychopath.
