La grande noirceur
With five feature films to his credit, Maxime Giroux is a filmmaker who has been making his mark on Quebec fiction cinema for over a decade. In anticipation of what's to come, we offer a first look at his accomplished work. His films are so many different ways of supporting actors, developing fiction with their scriptwriters, with a fresh sense of detail that often draws its resources from an accomplished representation of affects.
In the presence of the director
While a world war rages, Philippe, a draft-dodger from Quebec, takes refuge in the American West, surviving by competing in Charlie Chaplin impersonation contests. As Philippe makes his long journey home, he encounters various characters under the sway of a destructive madness borne of the chaotic times. His voyage, both violent and fascinating, is a hallucinatory initiation to the darker side of the American dream.
