Cinema is a screen onto which we can project our fears, torments and the monstrosities of the world. The screen protects us from what we see, but cinema has also permanently anchored our nightmares around a few powerful images (empty houses, hostile attics and basements, demonic masks, bloodcurdling grimaces, disturbing postures). Throughout the summer, the Cinémathèque québécoise will be presenting a series of films encompassing more than one hundred and twenty years of horror, reminding us that what scares us most is to make the deepest of our fears tangible and credible.

Synopsis

Since the brutal death of her husband, Amelia has been struggling to bring her 6-year-old son, Samuel, back to his senses. Samuel has become completely uncontrollable and she can't seem to love him. When a storybook entitled 'Mister Babadook' mysteriously turns up in their home, Samuel is convinced that the 'Babadook' is the creature haunting his nightmares. His visions take on a life of their own, and he becomes increasingly unpredictable and violent. Amelia gradually begins to sense a malevolent presence around her, and realizes that Samuel's warnings may not just be hallucinations...
