Islands of perdition

Remote and mysterious, whether hostile or enticing, infernal microcosms or dreamed worlds, islands have long captivated the imaginations of filmmakers. By their very isolated nature, they often serve as metaphoric or literal settings of loss and introspection, inviting exploration and oblivion. Enclosed by water, they provide ideal backdrops for intimate dramas and intense adventures, their geography shaping the narrative. As many real-world islands face existential threats, we invite you to explore a few fictional isles where cinema has found its enchanting refuge along the shore.

Synopsis

Weakened by an abortion, Élie, a young Montrealer, travels to a fishing village on the Magdalen Islands. She makes friends with some of the inhabitants, but the mysterious reasons for her presence earn her the distrust of others, against a backdrop of tension between seal hunters and environmental activists. In reality, Élie is there to carry out a very intimate quest.

Sophie Deraspe

It was the visual arts and literature that led Sophie Deraspe to film. As a cinematographer or director, she made several forays into documentary before directing her first independent feature film. Rechercher Victor Pellerin (2006) plays with the codes of reality and was very well received by critics. Her second feature film, Les signes vitaux (2009), is equally imbued with realism and has also won awards in several international festivals. In 2015, Sophie launched the fiction film Les loups, a Canada-France co-production that brings together a cast of well-known Quebec actors. The same year, her documentary Le profil Amina, was presented in official competition at Sundance. In 2019, her film Antigone received international distribution and recognition. Sophie also directs dramatic series for television, Bête noire (2021) and Motel Paradis (2022).
