Who can kill a child?
Cinema is a screen onto which we can project our fears, torments and the monstrosities of the world. The screen protects us from what we see, but cinema has also permanently anchored our nightmares around a few powerful images (empty houses, hostile attics and basements, demonic masks, bloodcurdling grimaces, disturbing postures). Throughout the summer, the Cinémathèque québécoise will be presenting a series of films encompassing more than one hundred and twenty years of horror, reminding us that what scares us most is to make the deepest of our fears tangible and credible.
Tom and Evelyn are an English tourist couple visiting Spain. They have left their two children at home. Evelyn is pregnant. So it's only natural that they should make the most of it. Tom and Evelyn are the perfect couple. They're kind, beautiful and intelligent. They're also the perfect parents. As you can imagine, they love children. But all that perfection is about to be put to the test, when they arrive on the idyllic island of Almanzora. Something is very wrong. The place seems abandoned, except for a few (not very reassuring!) children wandering here and there. What if they've decided to eliminate the island's adults? And what if such a thing, however unimaginable, was only the first step towards raising awareness through the murder of children?
Narciso Ibanez Serrador
Narciso Ibáñez Serrador was a Spanish director, actor and screenwriter of television, film and theater. He received numerous honors throughout his career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Spanish Television Academy in 2002, the National Television Award presented by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2010 and the Honorific Goya Award presented by the Spanish Film Academy in 2018. Some of his credits include creating and directing the television programs Historias para no dormir ,* Historia de la frivolidad* and Un, dos, tres... responda otra vez in Televisión Española , as well as writing and directing the feature films The House That Screamed (1969) and Who can kill a child? (1976).
