143 Sahara Street
The films gathered in this series were all directed and produced during the last ten years. They sometimes show the state of the world. These singular works also explore new poetic registers, methods of filming that surprise by their capacity to render the air we breathe, with a sense of metaphor, provocation or play.

In the heart of the Algerian desert, Malika welcomes lorry-drivers and wanderers to her roadside teahouse for a cigarette or a cup of coffee and gives house-room to dreams. Portrait of a woman who only offers omelettes, with or without tomatoes, but her establishment is a place of passage and rest for the few travelers of the desert.

Hassen Ferhani
Hassen Ferhani is an Algerian director. After studying in Algiers, he co-hosted a film club there from 2003 to 2008. He won the Best Emerging Director award for his film 143 Sahara Street at Locarno in 2019. He is part of a new generation of Algerian filmmakers, alongside Karim Moussaoui, Yasmine Chouikh, and Lamine Ammar-Khodja.
