Montreal New Wave
Zany, pop, and colorful, the New Wave that swept through the 1980s brought with it a new sound, style, and attitude. This eclectic and playful program showcases Quebec’s New Wave, kicking off with Michel Lemieux’s performances.
Montreal New Wave documents and questions that unknown part of our recent cultural history. Through archives and interviews with key figures of the time, Montreal New Wave wants to shed light on a defining current that still inspires the quebec cultural scene today.

Érik Cimon
A singer-songwriter for the electropop band Moonbass first, Érik Cimon turned to directing, creating numerous music videos for Montreal’s underground bands of the 1990s and 2000s, including Caféïne, Les Breastfeeders, and Les Jardiniers. He simultaneously directed fiction short films that gained international recognition, such as Broil, The Cello, and Le piano de Louise. He also ventured into documentary filmmaking, directing several award-winning series episodes, such as Yin Yang le célibat, Les Citadins du rebut global, Hors-Série, Les guérisseurs, and Partir autrement, as well as impactful medium-length films like Mtl Punk and La face cachée de la viande. His critically acclaimed feature-length documentary, Montréal New Wave, earned him the Gémeaux Award for Best Documentary Film in Art and Culture in 2016. His latest documentary, L’école autrement, aired on Télé-Québec in 2023.
