Robert Breer's animation films
To celebrate the publication of the book Défier le film, le cinéma d'animation de Robert Breer, published by Somme toute, the Cinémathèque québécoise is welcoming two specialists of his work who will be paying tribute to the filmmaker who passed away in 2011. During a commented screening and a round table, Patrick Barrès, the author of the book, and Pascal Vimenet, who signed the preface, will highlight the singularity of Robert Breer's work, its place within the history of experimental animation and the variety of research avenues followed by the artist.
Cette projection se déroulera en présence de deux grands spécialistes du cinéma d’animation. Patrick Barrès est professeur à l’Université Toulouse - Jean Jaurès. Spécialiste des arts visuels, il vient de signer un ouvrage d’importance sur l’œuvre de Robert Breer aux éditions Somme toute. Pour sa part, Pascal Vimenet est réalisateur, écrivain et critique de cinéma. Critique de cinéma et programmateur, il a écrit de nombreux textes sur l’animation et conçu des rétrospectives et des expositions. Patrick Barrès et Pascal Vimenet présenteront et commenteront cinq courts métrages de Robert Breer tirés de nos collections. Le programme comprend aussi une interview réalisée par M. Vimenet lors du passage de Breer à Annecy en 2007. L’occasion rare de (re)découvrir l’œuvre et le génie d’un artiste majeur du cinéma d’animation expérimental.

Robert Breer
Né en 1926 à Détroit, au Michigan, Robert Breer étudie les arts et se lance dans la peinture avant de s’établir à Paris de 1949 à 1960. Il y fréquente l’avant-garde de l’époque, tournant ses premiers films expérimentaux. Le plus souvent abstraits, les films de Breer proposent une mise en forme du mouvement à l’aide de lignes et de formes simples. Les collages, la rotoscopie et le flicker font partie des techniques utilisées par l’artiste. Parmi ses films marquants, nommons A Man and His Dog Out for Air (1956), jeu de lignes mi-figuratif, mi-abstrait, et Fuji (1974). À son retour aux États-Unis, il devient une figure de premier plan du cinéma expérimental américain. En 1962, Jonas Mekas et lui fondent la Film-Makers’ Cooperative de New York. En 1967, il participe à la Rétrospective mondiale du cinéma d’animation à Montréal. Dans les années 1960, il élargit le spectre de sa pratique en réalisant des sculptures motorisées. Le Musée-Château d’Annecy lui consacre une exposition en 2006. Robert Breer est décédé en 2011.
