The Nightmare Before Christmas (3D)
The holiday season comes with a tradition of heartwarming stories. Cinema has long embraced these tales once shared by the fireside, sometimes transforming them. This program brings together a selection of such films, highlighting various approaches and celebrating Quebecois narratives.
Bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere.
Henry Selick
Henry Selick is an American animator, screenwriter, director, and producer, specialised in stop motion. According to him, he did little but draw from age 3 to 12. His fascination with animation came at a young age, when he saw Lotte Reiniger's stop-motion film The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) and the animated creatures of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) by Ray Harryhausen. After his academic studies, he went to work for Walt Disney Studios where he met an array of inspiring artists, including Tim Burton, who served as producer on his first two films as director, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and James and the Giant Peach (1996). Selick also directed the first ever stereoscopic 3D stop-motion animated film, Coraline, in 2009.
