Jean Grémillon
Jean Grémillon was a French film director and sceenwriter. A musician, composer and author, he his known for his singular work. He is one of the most important directors in the history of French cinema according to Bertrand Tavernier. He directed his first feature film at the end of the silent era, Maldone (1928), under the guidance of Charles Dullin, who both produced and starred in the film. In 1937, he directed Jean Gabin in Gueule d’amour and Raimu, the following year, in L’étrange monsieur Victor, two films that earned him artistic and popular acclaim. During the Occupation, he notably directed Le ciel est à vous (1944), starring Madeleine Renaud and Charles Vanel, often regarded as one of his masterpieces. Over the course of his career, Grémillon also served as president of the Cinémathèque française and of the Syndicat national des techniciens de la production cinématographique et de télévision.
